Fleeting Reflections

Hugo de Villiers

Dates: 18 February – 25 March 2020

Opening on 18 February 2020 at 7pm and concludes on 25 March at 2pm.

Inspired by the ever changing contrasts in traffic and city lights in wet, dark conditions, Hugo de Villiers presents his second solo exhibition at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery titled ‘Fleeting Reflections’.

De Villiers’s paintings derive from a small selection of thousands of photographs predominantly taken through a moving car’s windshield in characteristic stormy Cape conditions. Between darting lights from passing traffic, wild waving window wipers and unpredictable reflective surfaces, there is understandably a large amount of perseverance, patience and luck involved in capturing images to edit and finally work from.

The goal, says De Villiers, is not to imitate naturalistic scenes, but rather to capture the mood and feel of urban spaces through compositions of contrasting textures, colours, tones and shapes. De Villiers attempts to capture an atmosphere of recognisable chaos and vibrant energy in his paintings.

Hugo de Villiers graduated with a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts from the University of Stellenbosch in 1990 and later earned his Higher Diploma in Education from UNISA in 1996. He has previously exhibited at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery, Artb Gallery, Artscape, Liebrecht Gallery and at the Woordfees in Stellenbosch.
