Isheanesu Dondo

Throughout Dondo’s drawings and paintings we see traces of the artist’s particular cosmology, a world view steeped in his southern African context and subtly impacted by the colonial past. Dondo lives and works between Mutare, the ‘capital’ of Zimbabwe’s eastern highlands and Shamva, north-east of Harare, where his interest in Shona beliefs has been nurtured alongside a study of Western esotericism and biblical mythology.

Delving into the world of symbolism and hermeticism, Dondo employs his own system of symbols in his drawings, creating poetic rather than prescriptive associations between forms.

Dondo’s work has been exhibited in group exhibitions in Zimbabwe, South Africa, the Netherlands and the UK.
